Impenetrable labyrinths

Successive waves of conquistadores, surveyors, and photographers have all laid claim to the landscape of the American West. Many generations of immigrants have followed alongside, courted by the promise of prosperity and freedom. But the path to the American Dream can be challenging. The roads through steep and arid canyons and gorges mirror the immigrant journey. Photographing them represents an attempt to claim the land and the promise of that nation as well. The resulting images tear apart and rebuild the landscape revealing seemingly impenetrable labyrinths of earth and stone. They provide a first-person glimpse of the awestruck outsider embarking on a harrowing migration, whether to the United States or elsewhere.

Hugo Teixeira

Hugo Teixeira grew up in the Luso-American community in San Jose, California. After 12 years living abroad, including eight years in Macau, he returned to the United States to complete an MFA in Photography and Related Media at the Rochester Institute of Technology. His artwork is inspired by research about migration, expatriatism, displacement and identity. He adopts a hybrid production approach which combines vernacular fabrication skills alongside various contemporary and historical photographic techniques. The resulting sculptures and collages exploit the semantic properties of his photographs, found images,  and materials to best express the complex narratives of migrants and their descendants. As an artist and teacher, Teixeira has exhibited work in the United States, Portugal, and Macau.
