THE BOX MAN

Inspired by Kobo Abe and his novel The Box Man

On the night of the 23rd, the Police Department of the City conducted a raid on vagrants in all areas of the city. 180 people were arrested and charged with violations of the law on minor offences (vagrancy and begging) and the rules of conduct in public spaces (actions prohibited on the streets). The arrestees were taken to the nearest police department, and were later released after they pledged to “stop living as a vagrant”. However, an hour later, almost all of them again returned to their original places.

In this regard, our group went to the above-mentioned areas, hoping to find those who are usually considered vagrants, homeless people, or beggars, although they do not consider themselves as such. These people are not interesting to society, nor vice versa.

Box Man #1 loves the nature and always tries to stay in places surrounded by greens. After two days of communication, Box Man #1 agreed to do a photoshoot in his favorite spots. He also requested us to send him one of the photos later, which he will hang inside the box.On the last day, we found out that Box Man #1 has a friend. Let’s call him Box Man #2, living on the other side of the area. We took the path under one of main bridges to visit him. The bridge was an important place in the past life of Box Man #1, which he remembers unwillingly.

Box Man #2 thinks he is an architect and so he chooses to live in a building, preferably abandoned, because people are aggressive to each other. The building is in disrepair but he feels comfortable living inside.

The two Box Men met each other two years ago, and they have been keeping in touch since then. According to them, during the raids by the police, the City Administration, and other authorized personnel, they were not offered any assistance but were treated as beggars and homeless people.

If you have any information about them or other Box Men, please contact the City Administration.
