Introduction

The Paris Metro is the 4th oldest subterranean railway in the world, opened in 1900. Because of its age, Paris’ metro has its perks and oddities much like any other underground railway. Hopefully some of these have been captured in this series of photographs. The system has a number of derelict and disused stations, closed for a number of different reasons and, as a first-time explorer in Paris, these were the main attraction. We started exploring the stations in quick succession and soon our attention was drawn to the lesser-seen side of the metro. To stray the path that’s already rarely walked on.

Although there are many photos of the derelict stations and trains in the tunnels, both passenger and worker, this series makes no photographic mention of either, therefore creating an aura of stillness that is both true and false. While many of these photos were taken long after service had finished when the system was quiet, some were taken during service while trying to avoid being hit by passing trains after running off the platforms while trying not to be seen. Getting arrested was always the least concern when trespassing on the railway.

The sense of danger in taking many of these photos is somewhat lost and that is the intention. You get to see one of the busiest metros in the world, still and calm, but, at the same time these are the places you are not allowed to see and probably don’t recognise.
