Blurry Foreground

Cities are an important part of human civilization, and they have developed along with its progress. It is generally believed that cities in the true sense of the word are the product of industrial and commercial development.

It is precisely because of industrial and commercial development that people have come to live together in search of better living conditions. But the most direct consequence of such development is a dramatic increase in population, which has created an array of problems, including those in housing, employment, education,
public health, and public sanitation. To solve these problems, cities need to be re-planned.

Urban re-planning requires land. However, land reclaiming or creating new land often has an irreversible impact on the ecology and the context of the existing local community, which is unfair. As a person who has lived in the same community for many years, I feel uneasy about the future of my community when I notice that it is facing redevelopment.

The photos were taken on new reclamation sites, construction sites, areas to be redeveloped, and ruins. They were taken with a pinhole camera and black and white film, free from any lens or color effects. As pinhole imaging does not have a clear focus, it is up to viewers to decide whether the foreground (which is the same word for ‘prospect’ in Chinese) is good or bad.
